After recording this fine album for Rounder, Louisiana's Cox Family was signed to a major label contract: after one album for the Asylum label did not generate enough sales to please its big-wigs, the family was left in limbo, tied up by a contract with no chance of making other records --they would likely have fared much better by staying with the Rounder label. They were quite impressive on their first Rounder album and with their tasteful work with Alison Krauss on her excellent gospel album, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" (ROU-0307).Though the singing is excellent throughout (Suzanne Cox has an especially lovely voice), a few of the cuts stray a bit away from the group's best work, employing steel guitar and a bit too much percussion. But the band is wonderful on songs like BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET and BLUE BAYOU, and especially the old standards BROKEN ENGAGEMENT, I'LL BE ALL SMILES TONIGHT and LITTLE BIRDIE. It's a pleasure to hear these fine harmonies. Alison Krauss and members of her band help significantly in the instrumental backup.
