(4-CD set) Here is another attractively packaged 4-CD set from the British JSP label, and there’s a lot of interesting music here for all those fascinated with Bluegrass music’s formative years (it’s too bad that the ROUNDER label never re-issued their great 10-volume “EARLY DAYS OF BLUEGRASS” series onto compact disc). Despite the sometimes funky sound quality, and a generous number of errors, this set includes a lot of fine music, and at the bargain price it will be a welcome addition to those who enjoy these early efforts, which made up in soul & spirit what they may have lacked in technical proficiency. Working backwards, Disc 4 of this set is completely devoted to J.E. and Wade Mainer and Byron Parker’s band, plus Buster Carter & Preston Young’s ROLL IN MY SWEET BABY’S ARMS, the 1931 cut that ain’t Bluegrass, but is interesting as the source for later versions by the Monroe Brothers and Flatt & Scruggs). Disc 3 is pretty much all Jim Eanes (7 cuts) and Roy Hall’s Blue Ridge Entertainers (13 tracks)—all good stuff. Discs 1 and 2 may be the most interesting for containing a bunch of rare odd label recordings by lesser known bands & artists like Connie & Babe, Hobo Jack Adkins, Ted Lundy, Phebel Wright, Rebe & Rabe, Frank Wakefield, Red Belcher and the Lilly Brothers among others. Some of the great cuts here include Marvin Cobb & Frank Wakefield’s NEW CAMPDOWN RACES (sic), Cecil Surratt’s fine BRIGHT CRYSTAL SEA, L.C. Smith & Ralph Mayo’s RADIO BOOGIE, and good cuts by the Lilly Brothers and Red Belcher from the rare Page label. Other names to be found here include Jerry & Sky, Wilma Lee & Stoney, Toby Stroud, Sauceman Brothers, Pee Wee Lambert, and Buster Pack. Although there’s a fairly good amount of decent discographical data and notes, there’s a bit more sloppiness than should occur on a set like this: Ronnie Knittel’s HOLSTON VALLEY BREAKDOWN is mis-attributed to Red Belcher, there’s an extraneous version of BARBARA ALLEN that is not mentioned or identified in the notes or on the discs, and Hack Johnson’s HOME SWEET HOME is listed but the track is not to be found anywhere. There’s still a lot of music here (96 songs & tunes), most of it of good quality.
