GRANDPA JONES 'You're Never Too Old For Love'

It’s been almost ten years since Louis “Grandpa” Jones passed away after an Opry performance, and after a long career in country music that went back to a stint in Bradley Kincaid’s band. He entertained servicemen in Germany right after World War II, then had long & distinguished careers on the Grand Ole Opry and the Hee-Haw show. Not too much of his recorded work has been available on CD, especially his best work, which appeared on the King label in the late 1940s. This 29 track compilation is all taken from his later RCA Victor work, recorded from 1952 to 1955. Though Grandpa could sing a great ballad (like HILLS OF ROANE COUNTY), he was pegged as a novelty performer, and almost everything on this disc falls in that category. Unfortunately much of the material is weak stuff that may have been provided by the label (RCA had a way of doing this in the 50s to some of their artists like the Blue Sky Boys, Carter Sisters, and Johnnie & Jack among others). There are enough good pieces here to make it interesting, including cuts like OLD BLUE, MOUNTAIN LAUREL, DEAR OLD SUNNY SOUTH, Y’ALL COME, KEEP ON THE SUNNYSIDE, OLD RATTLER’S SON and OLD DAN TUCKER. The notes do not give any idea of who is backing Grandpa here, but there is a Chet Atkins style guitar (maybe Chet himself on some cuts) and it sounds like Red Rector’s mandolin on a few songs. Of course Grandpa’s frailing banjo is heard on just about every cut. $ 15.00
