RICKY SKAGGS & KENTUCKY THUNDER 'Honoring The Fathers Of Bluegrass'

  • $6.00

This new record harks back to the “Bluegrass Rules” and “Ancient Tones” albums that Ricky Skaggs recorded when he made the return to Bluegrass after a successful career in the country music world, except that it is totally devoted to songs of the “classic” 1946 and 1947 configuration of the band that most agree set the standard for others to follow—Monroe, Flatt, Scruggs, Wise & Howard Watts. Skaggs and his wonderful group of sidemen are up to the task, doing a great job of capturing the essence & spirit of a dozen songs that most Bluegrass fans never tire of, and rightly so. The only major differences between these tracks and the originals in arrangements are some lead guitar solos by Cody Kilby on a few pieces. The other band members are Andy Leftwich (fiddle), Jim Mills (banjo), Paul Brewster (guitar & tenor vocals) and Mark Fain (bass)—they are all superb. Skaggs of course furnishes the lead vocals and equally fine mandolin work. Added treats here are the presence of Earl Scruggs on one cut (I’M GOING BACK TO OLD KENTUCKY) and Del McCoury, who takes the tenor vocal on THE OLD CROSSROAD. Some may think it pointless to “cover” standards like WHY DID YOU WANDER, LITTLE CABIN HOME ON THE HILL, MANSIONS FOR ME, TOY HEART, etc., but this group does them so darn well that it’s fascinating, as well as being great music—I’ll bet they really had fun doing this record
