The Country Gentlemen did play at Carnegie Hall early in their career, but it was not recorded by Starday Records, their label at the time. Starday in fact just put out a number of 45rpm singles by the group until the band became worthy of a full Long Play album. This record just oozes with artificial echo (which was a popular recording “enhancement” in those days), but when the listener gets past that, there is a lot of wonderful music here. The 14 tracks include the following gems: TWO LITTLE BOYS, NEW FREEDOM BELL, THESE MEN OF GOD, A LETTER TO TOM, I NEVER WILL MARRY, WILLIE ROY THE CRIPPLED BOY, RED ROCKING CHAIR and SILENCE OR TEARS. You’ll even find John Duffey playing some dobro here as well. It was one of the great early Bluegrass albums and it’s good to have it available on CD
