This fine band from Southwestern Virginia has been a regional fixture for many years in spite of fairly regular changes in band personnel. After 7 or 8 records on the Hay Holler label, they have issued this one on their own Mountain Roads label, and it’s as good as any they have done. The band now consists of Tommy and Teresa Sells, with Johnny Williams on guitar, Lynwood Lunsford on banjo, Alan Mastin on bass and Jeff Michael back on fiddle. From the stunning track 1 trio on HIGH ALLEGHENIES to the neat cover of UncleDave Macon’s THE BIBLE’S TRUE, it’s all first rate, traditional picking and singing that should warm the heart of any lover of good hard-driving Bluegrass. Every one of the 15 cuts is good, but some of the highlights include Ray Cline’s GHOST OF A LOVE (with a heavy Larry Sparks/Stanley influence), tough versions of NASHVILLE JAIL, I’LL NEVER DREAM NO MORE, WEARY TRAVELER and ON THE OLD KENTUCKY SHORE, another good Tom T. Hall song in ALL THAT’S LEFT, a great treatment of Albert Brumley’s OLD TIME PREACHER MAN and a really sparkling banjo workout on Don Reno’s BANJO RIFF by Lunsford. The group may not be that well known nationally, but it certainly plays top-flight Bluegrass! Well recommended.
