This lawyer, musician, collector & promoter of rural American music & dance was a colorful & important figure from the 1920's to 1960's, working out of the Asheville, NC area. He recorded extensively for the Library of Congress as well as doing some commercial cuts for several labels in the 20's, but little of his music has available for the general fan lately. This release cures that problem splendidly as it provides a generous sampling of 18 songs that have been very well selected and lovingly presented with excellent notes. Wayne Martin derserves credit for a superb production that gives us a fine picture of this key old-time stylist whp played both banjo and fiddle. Songs include SWANNANOA TUNNEL, SWING LOW, DRY BONES, MOUNTAIN DEW, RYE STRAW, ITALY, DEATH OF QUEEN JANE, LITTLE TURTLE DOVE, MOLE IN THE GROUND.
