FRANKLIN GEORGE & DAVID O'DELL 'Reflections Of The Past'
Considering that Franklin George is considered, rightly so, one of the masters of old time music, he has been hugely under-recorded. After his classic Kanawha LP(available as County CD-2703), it was another ten years before the issue of SWOPE'S KNOB on his own label and since then an obscure cassette or two is all we can think of. This then is a most welcome recording as well as a very fine one. George on fiddle is nicely accompanied by David O'Dell on clawhammer banjo and most of the 12 pieces last from 3 to 4 minutes giving the duo plenty of space to really get into the tunes which are nicely selected. Danny Williams' notes detail where George learned each tune and give brief but well-presented data about the two musicians. An important & fine recording for lovers of good old time music. FOLDING DOWN THE SHEETS, TRAIN ON THE ISLAND, OVER THE WATERFALL, BARLOW KNIFE, LOCH LEVAN CASTLE, SUGAR IN THE GOURD, LIZA POOR GAL, GREEN MOUNTAIN REEL, SUGAR HILL, JORDAN IS A HARD ROAD TO TRAVEL.
