BLUEGRASS TIME by Phil Zimmerman ( pub. by the author 2008, 64 pp, softbound). This is a very nicely done collection of photos taken by the author at 13 Bluegrass festivals between 1972 and 1984. Although Mr. Zimmerman evidently was in attendance at the first Bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va. in 1965, there are no photos of that event here. According to his notes, Mr. Zimmerman was living in the Chicago area and later the northeast during the years these photos were taken, so the events documented here are primarily from up north: Escoheag, R.I., Enfield, Hillsdale and Cooperstown, N.Y., and others in Vermont, Connecticut and Delaware. Although there is a heavy emphasis on “newgrass” pickers—Grisman, Hartford, Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Andy Statman, Bela Fleck, etc—there are also really nice shots of Ralph Stanley, The Osborne Brothers, The Country Gentlemen, the Lilly Brothers & Don Stover (with Tex Logan), and of course Bill Monroe. There are interesting incidental shots of Kenny Baker, Vassar Clements, Lester Flatt, Don Reno and several dandy pictures of Frank Wakefield in all his eccentric glory. The photos from the 1976 Berkshire Mountain festival (a great festival) are among the most striking, with great shots of Wakefield, Bill Keith, Monroe, The Osbornes, and a young Peter Rowan. All done in black & white, most of the photos are stage shots around the microphones, but they are mostly of a high quality. This is a fine booklet that will bring back many great memories for those who were lucky enough to attend some of the great festivals of the 1970s and 80s. $ 22.50
