JULES ALLEN 'The Singing Cowboy-Complete Recordings'

  • $15.00

Texan Jules Allen was one of a handful of authentic cowboy singers to be signed up by record labels (notably Victor) in the 1920s—it’s safe to say his records, along with those of a few others like Carl Sprague, Peg Moreland, Harry McClintock and the Cartwright Brothers paved the way for the phenomenally successful careers of the movie cowboys like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in the 1930s & 40s, and later all the ersatz “cowboy” and “western” singers that followed. Allen—who was born in 1883—recorded just 22 songs in two marathon sessions in 1928 and 1929: they are all here on this comprehensive disc, sung mostly with just a simple guitar accompaniment (a few have fiddle and harmonica as well). Here you’ll find songs like TEXAS COWBOY, ZEBRA DUN, COW TRAIL TO MEXICO, THE DYING COWBOY, LITTLE JOE THE WRANGLER, THE DAYS OF FORTY NINE and PUNCHIN’ THE DOUGH. A couple of songs that just about everyone knows—HOME ON THE RANGE and OLD CHISHOLM TRAIL—feature melodies that are significantly different from those we are familiar with today. With informative notes by Tony Russell.
