Roberts, the mandolin picker for the GRASCALS has a very nice record here, featuring 13 tunes and songs --10 of them his own compositions. There's a good deal of variety here and everything is well arranged and played. Roberts is joined by several top Bluegrass musicians including Aubrey Haynie, Adam Haynes and Jimmy Mattingly (fiddles), Mike Compton, Ronnie McCoury and Sam Bush (mandolins) Tim Surrett (acoustic bass) and Kristen Scott Benson (banjo). All of these pickers contribute substantially to the recording, and Roberts has made a wise choice in adding three songs to provide variety, helping to set off the instrumentals. The songs are sung by Roberts' daughters Jaelee and Andrea, who do a very nice job on HOW GREAT THOU ART and I WENT DOWN A BEGGAR AND CAME UP A MILLIONAIRE. Especially effective are NEW GIL RAMBLE, F-5 RAG, NIGHTHAWK and a lovely duet of just mandolin and Kristen Benson's banjo on DANIELLE'S WALTZ. A fine mandolin album.
