We don't know anything about George Shifflett except what is given in the notes to this interesting and nicely done project, but he has a nice record here, with a good selection of material that includes a handful of his original songs. Not many western type songs have been "covered" by Bluegrass artists, but Shifflett shows they can work nicely in his versions of EL PASO and CATTLE CALL. He also tackled LOVESICK BLUES , IN THE GARDEN, and a couple of songs well familiar to the Bluegrass audience: HIGHWAY OF SORROW and LAST TRAIN FROM POOR VALLEY. Guest musicians include Ferrell Stowe (dobro), Wayne Benson (mandolin) and Shad Cobb on fiddle. A well done, enjoyable recording.
