VARIOUS ARTISTS 'Orthophonic Joy - The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited' SONY-1352-2CD

$18.00

Several years ago Carl Jackson produced a set of Louvin Brothers songs that featured various combinations of country artists singing duets that were written and/or recorded by the great duo from Alabama. It was an interesting concept that was executed brilliantly. This new issue reminds me of that set, which really was a labor of love, except that the new "package" includes snippets of the original musicians who trekked to Bristol to make some of the earliest rural music to come out on commercial records --including the first ever recordings of Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family. In the hands of a lesser producer, this project could easily have turned sour, but Carl Jackson --though based in Nashville --is a man of skill, integrity and good taste, and we thank him for this fascinating CD. Accompanied by a 24-page booklet of notes, the 2-disc set features 18 songs and tunes by such artists as Vince Gill, Doyle Lawson, Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Jesse McReynolds and the Chuck Wagon Gang among others. Each of these contemporary performances is preceded by a half minute or so of the original song or tune sung and played by old time artists like Ernest V. Stoneman, Alfred Karnes, B.F. Shelton, Blind Alfred Reed, and of course Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. While the original music is playing, there is excellent descriptive commentary by Eddie Stubbs, who recites intelligent and informative facts for each song or tune --well researched by one Dr. Cindy Lovell. There are no weak cuts here, and several of the contemporary pieces are strong, superb arrangements that bring new life to the songs while still being true to the wonderful originals. Check out a rousing BLACK EYED SUSIE by Marty Stuart, SWEET HEAVEN WHEN I DIE by the Steep Canyon Rangers with Steve Martin, TRAIN ON THE ISLAND by Larry Cordle, and a lovely rendition of IN THE PINES sung by Brad Paisley & Carl Jackson. A lot of great music here that is beautifully played and is truly a tribute to the original "old timers".
