There are only 8 songs on this new issue from the Tompkins Square label, and most—if not all—of them have been included in other CDs, especial from his Smithsonian/Folkways records, but somehow this is a very satisfying package— in fact it is what the notes say is Holcomb’s first (and perhaps only) full live performance. In 1972, under the guidance of San Diego promoter Lou Curtiss, Holcomb journeyed from the tiny town of Daisy, Kentucky to appear on the annual state folk festival, surely making a profound and lasting impression on the basically urban audience. The 8 pieces he played there included LITTLE BIRDIE, OLD SMOKY, ACROSS THE ROCKY MOUNTAINJ, SINGLE GIRL, GRAVEYARD BLUES and HOOK & LINE. Good notes by Curtiss as well as John Cohen put things in perspective in what was an historical event.
